I recently found out there is a way to bring some life into my aging iRiver H120. I had installed Rockbox for a long time for its FLAC support, and the guys from Rockbox found a way to enable the use of CompactFlash cards as internal storage. This has the advantage of getting bigger storage (currently 64GB CF cards are available) at a lower weight, no noise/clicking as there are no moving parts, better response times as the CF card does not need to park heads or stop/start spinning and of course lower power consumption and prolonged battery life.

I decided to get a Transcend 32GB 133x card, as those are the cheapest 32GB 133x cards available and have real solid performance (as reported by various users on Am@zon.de). Additionally they offer life-time guarantee.

Das neueste Flagschiff von AVM, die Fritzbox 7390, wird bei den VDSL-Providern gern als Endgerät eingesetzt. An Funktionen findet sich auf der 7390 wirklich alles, was in einem normalen Haushalt benötigt wird.
Zusätzlich auch eine Möglichkeit zum Aufbau von VPN-Verbindungen, auch zwischen zwei Standorten. Doch wie hoch ist der Durchsatz an Daten, den die 7390 beim Übertragen von Daten zu einem anderen VPN-Standort schafft?

Bei einer Anbindung einer 7390 an eine Watchguard Firebox x750e (max. 50 Mbit/sec 3DES-Durchsatz) mit 3DES-SHA1 als Verschlüsselung wird bei einem FTP-Transfer eine Rate von 5 Mbit erreicht, die Prozessorleistung der 7390 wird hierbei in der GUI mit 96% angezeigt.
Wird parallel ein zweiter FTP-Transfer angestossen, so steigt der maximale Durchsatz auf 7,1 Mbit/sec 3DES. Dabei werden 99% CPU-Last angezeigt, und bei einem gleichzeitigen Telefongespräch sind leichte Knackser/Hüpfer zu hören.

Mehr Bandbreite könnte man über die Nutzung von einfachem DES herausholen, dazu muss die Konfig-Datei für den Import in die Fritzbox von Hand editiert werden.

If using the Qnap NAS systems with a gigabit switch supporting jumbo frames you will obtain around 15-16MB/sec. By activating jumbo frames on the NAS & your network card you can achieve the specified maximum of 32MB/sec download fromthe NAS.


Qnap says the following in the manual:



1) Activating jumbo frames in your network card
In Microsoft Windows, right-click the Network Adapter in Network Connections, and then click Properties.
Click the Configure button and then the General tab. Jumbo MTU is set at 1500 bytes by default. I suggest using 9000 and reducing the value in case of problems.



2) Activating jumbo frames in the NAS
Open the NAs web interface, go to TCP/IP properties, activate jumbo frames with a frame size of 9000 and apply.
